Set in 1922, nine years after the action of Pygmalion, the play posits developments along very different lines to that suggested by Shaw: the education Eliza received at Higgins’ and Pickering’s hands has unlocked her immense innate abilities, and she moves towards goals far removed from her disadvantaged beginnings by following Higgins’ and Doolittle’s example and establishing a connection to America.
